Description
Painted from Stickle Tarn, this painting conveys that special feeling where everything is at peace except for the sounds of a mountain stream, when wandering high up in the fells. William captures the beck dropping off steeply into the Great Langdale valley far below. Across the valley, one can see distinctive profile of Lingmoor fell and Side Pike, with that of Wetherlam and the Coniston Fells in the distance. Sadly, William painted this tranquil scene just before the outbreak of the Second World War.
"I find that Stickle Tarn makes a dramatic and interesting picture from most angles, even when looking down at an angle of sixty degrees from the top of Rake End Chimney. The most unusual first view is from the dam at the outlet, with Pavey Ark filling the sky and the water dark below it. Hardly anything could be more different than the view from the opposite end where the stream comes in.
