Description
A painting which took William four years to complete, began life as a detailed drawing after he was first inspired by the scene in the early 1950s. Over the years, the familiar view of Helm Crag towering above the lake was seen again in similar conditions and a colour study was produced when there was still enough light in the sky to see and work by. The exquisite finished version was finally completed in his studio, working from this earlier study.
"The first time that I saw this as a subject to be painted was on a summer evening as I was walking along the western shore of Grasmere Lake without any thought of painting and without any materials. It is a subject. in which the shapes are interesting under any conditions, but in this half light it was exquisite, the strong quiet blues and umbers of the land in contrast with the gentle gradation of sky from gold to violet grey.
"The most difficult and interesting part of the painting in a technical sense was the gradation of the sky, which had to be painted swiftly enough for the high feathery cirrus clouds in the zenith to be flicked out while the paint was still wet.
"When asked the question of how long it takes to paint a picture, it is quite useful to say, ‘Anything from half an hour to four years!’” – William Heaton Cooper, Lakeland Portraits, p.92.
