Description
In this winter scene, painted in early January from Whinlatter Pass, William presents a commanding view down over Bassenthwaite Lake. The Skiddaw massif can be seen soaring up on the right, still covered in a coat of snow. On the left, a handful of conifer trees hug the lower reaches of the fells, which roll sharply down towards the fields and the shore below. A burst of sunlight breaks through the cloud, illuminating the lake and surrounds, creating a striking contrast to the cooler winter tones.
"I have looked down to the lake from this point on Whinlatter Pass hundreds of times over the years and never wanted to paint it until this day in early January.
"A few days of sun had melted the snow here and there on the southern slopes and among the fields of Thornthwaite, but Skiddaw and the low moors to the north side still showed white, and belated gleams of sunlight took on a strange glory in such a grey world. Then gradually a curtain of falling snow, creeping in from the north, obliterated the far end of the lake until it was falling thick and heavy and no more could be seen.

I knew that the picture depended on the lake being allowed to almost disappear into the sky, together with the one gleam of sunlight in that particular place.
