Description
Painted on a day of sun, wind and cloud, William expertly captures the view from Blackbeck Tarn looking north-west over the Buttermere valley. The tarn, which is the largest of those on Haystacks, is hidden from view from the valley below, lying in a hollow on the edge of Warnscale Crags. Its outlet stream falls immediately down a ravine between the steep dark crags, joining Warnscale Beck a thousand feet below as it flows into Buttermere. In the distance, as viewed from the tarn, William has painted the blue-shadowed fells of the High Stile range, rising up on the left.
"Looking from the tarn through the cleft of the ravine is one of the more dramatic sights of Haystacks. The foreground is so gay with sparkling contrast of pale ashen rock and dark heather. Sometimes the breezes play over the glassy surface of the water, sending spears of blue across the colourful reflections. Through the gap the profiles of High Crag and High Stile, smoky blue as they often are, fall steeply and dramatically into the unseen valley.
"The kind of day on which I enjoy this place most is one of sunlight shining through haze, when there are broad simple shapes of lights and shadows in the distance, possibly thundery blues with orange lights in the sky. These conditions show well the colour recession, and bring out the contrast of texture between the sparkling foreground and velvet distance.
"Even on the dullest day this place gives me a sense of light." – William Heaton Cooper, Tarns of Lakeland, p.73-74.
