Description
The great, serrated wall of Dow Crag rises dramatically over Goats Water, a short climb up from Coniston. In this painting from 1924, when William was only 21, he captures himself and his friends climbing Easter Gully on a late summer’s day, as they had so many times before. He deftly conveys the striking contrast between the shaded rock face and the sunlit fellside of the Old Man of Coniston beyond. It serves as an early example of his talent for recalling what he so aptly described as “rock-strewn amphitheatres”.
"It was a gloriously sunny day in September, the sunlit golden grasses and light rocks on the Old Man casting a warm reflected light into our gully, Goats Water beneath and Coniston Water beyond introducing contrasting tones of blue into the landscape.
For this, I made a detailed pencil drawing in my sketchbook and recalled the tones, colours and figures at leisure in my studio. We managed several climbs that day, finishing with Intermediate Gully. It was almost dark when we arrived on the summit of Dow Crags and our mood of achievement and wonder was immensely heightened and deepened by watching the last after-sunset glow over the sea to the west.” – William Heaton Cooper, Mountain Painter, p.16.
