Description
William chose a calm spring day to paint this now-familiar view of Buttermere, its vibrant colours brought to life by the sunlight bathing the fells. At the head of the lake, Fleetwith Pike is framed by two trees in the foreground, with the distinctive outline of Haystacks to the right. The fells are reflected in ripples across the lake, while in the distance, the ridge running from Grey Knotts to Brandreth is just visible, painted in a wash of velvety tones.
“A quiet April day, at the time of year when new life is spreading a flush of green upwards from the lake to the grass slopes among the rocks and screes. Some of the trees were well in leaf. This year the ash was very late and most of the year bore out the old rhyme, ‘Oak before ash, splash; ash before oak, soak.’
“I painted close to where the outlet stream leaves the lake on its short journey to Crummock Water. The Scots pines on Hassness Point showed dark against the line of pines at the head of the lake. Fleetwith dominated the picture, its Honister Crag falling steeply to the Pass and its western slope swinging into Warnscale crowned by the Haystacks; the ridge of Brandreth showed faintly behind them.
