Description

This view from the southern tip of Esthwaite Water, nestled quietly beside the Northern end of Windermere and underneath Latterbarrow is comprised of a near-perfectly due-North perspective towards Helvellyn and the masses of Fairfield and Red Screes in the distance, with the gently rippling waters below sliding away to the right of the composition.

Cold and inhospitable background details are gently balanced with the warm tones of winter’s hillsides and woodland, brought to life further by Alfred’s detailing of the living things around; grazing fell sheep, the bright white birches and the dotted evergreens throughout that punctuate the scene.

Esthwaite Water is one of the less-frequented parts of the Lake District but those who venture are rewarded with serene lake experiences and dramatic, comprehensive mountain views.
