Description
Harter Fell and Mardale Ill Bell, at the head of Haweswater, together guard the Nan Bield Pass, one of the remoter, ancient hill routes of the Lake District, here linking the valley of the River Kent with Mardale and the valley of the Lowther running north to Penrith. This view by William from the vicinity of the old corpse road that links Mardale with Swindale and Shap shows the mountains here on a clear winter morning, with the tree-girt peninsula of The Rigg projecting into Haweswater at the base of the Long Stile ridge running east from the summit of High Street.
