Description
The iconic Langdale Pikes rise up onto the skyline as one enters the Greater Langdale valley, it’s a sight that has captivated visitors and locals for centuries alike. In this painting inspired by an earlier visit, William expertly captures the mountains bathed in the golden glow of a spring sunrise. To the left, the slopes of Lingmoor drop to the valley floor, still cast in shadow at the foot of the fell. The Langdale Pikes dominate the horizon, with Harrison Stickle rising majestically at the centre, and Pavey Ark to the right. The valley floor below, seems to wait in anticipation, for the first rays of sunlight.
“The sun lit up this rugged mountain sculpture in a burning glory, the shadows were milky blue towards the distance and nearer, filled with reflected light from the brilliant sky.
“I saw this about seven o'clock one morning as I was on my way to another subject at the head of the valley. On the following day I came back to it, rather earlier, drew in the leading shapes with a brush and pale colour, and for quite a long time watched the shadows creeping down each fold and buttress, not attempting to keep pace with it or copy it.
“Then, having decided on the moment when the shadows were right, I painted what I remembered swiftly and directly, referring all the time to the form of the landscape, which was by that time flooded in sunlight.
“This is a good example of a rather conventional view being transformed at a certain time of day and season into a most impressive and interesting subject.” – William Heaton Cooper, Lakeland Portraits, p.70.
