Description

This luminous watercolour shows the fishing village of Skagen in North Jutland, painted probably in 1926 when Alfred was travelling throughout Sweden and Denmark. Skagen was a magnet for artists due to the influences of a group of nineteenth century impressionists known as the ‘Skagen Painters’.

Alfred has cleverly left some of the sand of the dunes in the picture’s foreground unpainted, so the white of the watercolour paper contrasts brilliantly with his bold use of blues and browns to suggest the sweep and flow of grass and shade. Bright colours picked out in the distant houses of the village are mirrored in the wind-blown wildflowers of the dunes.

Set within a subtle white wash frame.
