Description
In this evocative painting of Stickle Tarn in the Langdales, William captures the scene from an unexpected viewpoint – just below Pavey Ark, where Bright Beck enters the tarn. Painted on a still day, he expertly captures the reflections of the blue sky, fleeting clouds and velvet blues of the distant Coniston Fells in the gentle ripples on the water surface. The blues contrast harmoniously with the rich sepias and rock-strewn surroundings of the tarn.
"I find that Stickle Tarn makes a dramatic and interesting picture from most angles, even when looking down at an angle of sixty degrees from the top of Rake End Chimney. The most unusual first view is from the dam at the outlet, with Pavey Ark filling the sky and the water dark below it. Hardly anything could be more different than the view from the opposite end where the stream comes in.
