Description

An early winter’s day: crispness and clarity in the air, a silence rarely enjoyed from this perspective across the Lake and an all-encompassing view of the majestic Langdale fells. Skirting the side of Skelghyll Wood, where some of the tallest trees in the country dwell, William’s leading lines take us through to the off-centred summits of Harrison Stickle and Pike ‘o’ Stickle, with the dramatic buttresses of Bowfell in shadow opposite. Ultramarine and Cobalt Blues dominate the serene water scene, but are also visible in delicately mixed shade throughout the painting and offset by gentle autumn hues.
