Description

William and Dorothy Wordsworth called Easedale ‘The Black Quarter’, as most of the bad weather that periodically affected the Vale of Grasmere seemed to come from this north-westerly direction. In this dramatic painting by William, a storm is threatening to sweep down on Grasmere village from the heights of Tarn Crag, its shadows already darkening the foaming waterfalls of Sourmilk Gill visible in the middle distance.

Caught in a last burst of sun before the cloudburst hits, the trees to the left and the post-and-rail fence to the right of Easedale Beck quaver in a sudden uncertainty of air. William has painted the beck in a solid fluidity that betrays no gleam of hopeful light on its surface; instead it muscles its way towards us, carrying the weight of water that has already swamped the high fells in the distance.
