Description

Painted on a calm afternoon in early autumn, this meditative perspective on Rydal Water shows Heron Island and, to its right, the whitewashed walls of Nab Cottage, dating from 1702. The cottage, now a retreat centre, was home to the Simpson family whose daughter Margaret became the wife of Thomas de Quincey.

 

Later Nab Cottage became home to Hartley Coleridge (eldest son of Samuel Taylor Coleridge) who rented the house from 1840 until his death there in 1849.

 

Set within a a tasteful light green frame.
