Description
Formed from what were originally three separate tarns, Tarn Hows is one of the most famous scenic landmarks in the Lake District. It was given to the nation by Sir S.H.Scott in 1930, the Monk Coniston estate surrounding most of it having been bought to prevent its being split up by Beatrix Potter and her husband, Hawkshead solicitor William Heelis, for £15,000 (£1.25 million in today’s money). In this beautifully serene painting, Alfred shows it in the quiet of an early autumnal morning, with the distant fells to the north of the Tarn appearing smoky blue and grey above the plantations and reflections in the middle distance.
Set within a tasteful pewter and gold frame.
